Stop thinking and start!

I over-think many things…often.  Usually because I want to achieve perfection, but then cannot meet my own high standards.  Somehow non-achievement feels better than “failure” so what ever I am trying to do, doesn’t get finished, or sometimes even started.   I know I am not the only one like this, and I know these feelings can cross over into many aspects of our lives: exercise, diets, work tasks, homework, housework, (blog posts)….the list goes on.

But I heard some good advice recently at a conference on food: “Stop thinking and start”.

When I first heard it, I  thought “start what?”  and was waiting for the rest of the sentence, expecting to hear advice about food or exercise.

But that was not the point…….it doesn’t matter what you need to start, just stop thinking about it and start doing it.  Progress is better than perfection.  (I just need to keep repeating that mantra!)

Can’t get to 10,000 steps per day?  Okay, just do what you can, measure it if possible (many phone have a free step counting app) and see what you can do to take it just one step further (yes, pun intended).

Can’t give up all sugar?  Okay, can you start with delaying time between snacks, or reducing drink portion size, and when that succeeds work out the next goal?

Can you tell your goals to a supportive friend who can help encourage you in your efforts – but make the goal realistic and achievable.   It may be more helpful if you can find a friend who is more likely to say things like “Let’s get takeaway coffee and go for a walk and chat, rather than sitting down and chatting over coffee.”  Or, “Don’t beat yourself up for not achieving your goal today, it was a tough day.  Do you want to discuss options to help you manage this better next time?”

Sure, this is often easier said than done.  But sometimes we learn more when we don’t achieve our expectations.

Personally, I find writing a challenge.  I am never satisfied with what I write.  But how to improve?  Practice, practice, and more practice.

I also find it difficult to choose topics for this blog.  If there is something you want to learn from me – please ask.   I’ll do my best to answer your question, which will benefit you, but at the same time, I’ll learn what you want to learn from me, which will help me work out what else to write in a blog…and…get in more writing practice, which will help me.

I’d call that a win-win.
